Bag-in-Box
More choice for the wine you love
Welcome to Performance BIB.
This presentation will take you through the benefits of Bag-in-Box as a packaging for wine such as:
Keeping wine fresh for longer after opening
Being convenient for many different occasions
Having excellent environmental credentials.
Bag-in-Box can deliver a vast range of great-tasting wines
enabling wine-drinkers to enjoy the product they love in a way that’s convenient for them.
We aim to give you a better understanding…
of what the bag and the box are designed to do and how they can fit into your life style.
Then when you go to buy wine, you will have a greater understanding of the choice of packaging formats on offer.
Ultimately, Bag-in-Box provides you with excellent choice for the wine you love.
So which wine packaging format will you choose?
Nothing is more important to wine drinkers than finding a consistently enjoyable wine in their glass.
Bag-in-Box will keep wine fresh after opening
is convenient and offers an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional wine packaging.
If wine is exposed to air, over time the quality of the wine will start to diminish as the wine oxidises.
BiB has the ability to keep wine fresh after opening for up to six weeks
because the bag collapses down protecting the wine from air while it sits in your fridge or on your shelf.
This helps to maintain the quality of the wine
The internal bag is designed to collapse as wine is drawn from the tap.
This is unique in wine packaging and helps protect the wine against oxidation.
The Wine quality is maintained for several weeks after opening a Bag-in-Box.
Nothing is more important to wine drinkers than finding the quality of their wine stays the same.
Meaning that Bag-in-Box wine, which can be enjoyed over a number of weeks
with the last glass tasting as fresh as the first
is a great way to enjoy the wine you love in moderation.
Keeping air out of the box means the remaining wine will stay fresh for up to six weeks
ideal for those who enjoy a regular individual glass of wine.
You can be confident that your last glass of wine will taste as good as the first
so there’s no need to drink it all in one go!

So which wine packaging format will you choose?
Whether you’re hosting a barbecue, going to a festival, or just enjoying a glass at home on a sunny day
Bag-in-Box wine offers a versatile packaging solution that lets you enjoy the wine you love.
A (built-in) handle makes the box far easier to carry.
This 3 litre box is the equivalent of carrying 4 bottles of wine.
As you can see trying to carry 4 bottles of wine is quite a challenge
when compared to the convenient and easy to carry Bag-in-Box.
Bag-in-Box wines are available in many countries and are available in different sizes from 5 litre to 1.5L.
When with friends, there is nothing better than sharing a delicious glass of wine
freshly poured from the easy to operate tap of a Bag-in-Box wine.
You can even fill a carafe to put on the table, keeping the rest of the wine chilled in the fridge.
It’s the simplest way to top up your glass.
As more and more people are opting for wine as their drink of choice for relaxed meals and outdoor events
consumers are increasingly welcoming the convenience of Bag-in-Box.
It’s the natural choice for holidays, picnics, festivals and any number of other outdoor activities
because it’s so lightweight in relation to its volume - it’s a compact, highly portable format that won’t get damaged in transit.
Long-lasting freshness helps encourage responsible drinking
Because Bag-in-Box wine stays fresh longer, there’s no need to finish it all in one go
so you can savour the occasional glass of quality wine without worrying it will go to waste.
The more compact shape of Bag-in-Box means that it’s easer to store than conventional forms of wine packaging
whether in the fridge or at room temperature in your cupboard.
And importantly, as the wine stays fresh for longer you won’t have to do this when using a Bag-in-Box wine.
It is hard to find a packaging format for wines that is so well adapted
to the many different places and situations in which wine has become an integral part of people’s lives.

So which wine packaging format will you choose?
As a lightweight packaging format, Bag-in-Box is an easy way to help reduce the impact of wine packaging on the environment.
Bag-in-Box wine has a much smaller carbon footprint than traditional wine packaging
as less energy is consumed in production and transport.
In fact there are numerous independent studies
(such as the Franklin study done in 2006, BioIntelligence in 2010, and the Pira study in 2009)
that quantify carbon footprints and other environmental impact indicators for wine packaging
that indicate that Bag-in-Box is among the most environmentally conscious wine packaging formats available.
As we can see from the previous chart, the production cycle for a 3L BIB uses approximately 82% less CO2 than that for a glass wine bottle
and a pallet of Bag-in-Box wine holds 80 per cent more liquid
yet is less than two-thirds of the weight of its bottled counterpart.
That means less fuel is needed to transport the same volume of wine.
Bag-in-Box is approximately 75% paper and cardboard, which is 100% recyclable.
Reducing raw materials and energy use is key to sustainability – this includes water.
Studies* have shown that water use is substantially less for BIB, PET and stand up Pouches.
The fact that it’s much lighter than traditional packaging
means that the storage, distribution and transport of Bag-in-Box wine have a less damaging effect on the environment.

So which wine packaging format will you choose?
Bag-in-Box is ideal for all occasions
It is the natural choice for picnics and other outdoor activities or when on holiday
Don’t just take my word for it.
Let’s listen to what customers have to say about the benefits and taste quality of Bag-in-Box wines.
"I mean, for me, I think there's less packaging, so there's less waste."
"Personally, it's just sort of easier to recycle to be honest with you"
"I tell you what, it's greener. because you can smash it all down and get it in your recycling bin.
It takes up less space in the bin. It's cardboard - I'd rather recycle cardboard than glass."
"It's the environmental side as well, you haven't got all the bottles, you just collapse one carton and that's it."
"Mainly because it's easier buying it in bulk I guess is the simple answer to that one.
Rather than having to buy four bottles, just buying one purchase I think it's easier to get it home."
"With a bottle it goes down too quickly and you've got to go back to the shop and get some more
whereas with a box you can put it in the fridge and it's there for the following evening or whenever you want it next
so it kind of stops you going to the shops every ten minutes. It's definitely more convenient - much easier to have around the house"
"Well it was my husband really, he said it would be lighter for me to carry when he wasn't with me."
"It keeps fresh - once you open a bottle, it goes off - with a box it doesn't."
"I know if I leave a bottle of white open - or even red, thinking about it - it does seem to start turning very shortly
but when it's in the box in the fridge, it does seem to stay the same all the way through - I never seem to notice any difference."
Bag-in-Box lasts longer once opened than its bottled counterparts and is easy to carry and store.
And with an ever-increasing range of quality wines available in this format
it’s no surprise that Bag-in-Box has become the packaging of choice for so many wine-lovers.

We also want to understand - and where possible lessen the environmental impact of BIB packaging systems.
Over more than ten years we have conducted many scientific studies
and produced several Guides of Good Practices
all related to ensuring the customer gets the best possible experience when they buy wine in Bag-in-box.
We want to communicate our knowledge throughout the entire supply chain
including Performance BiB members, but also to journalists, retailers and wine consumers.
