Why do we look at art in the first place?
We want something.
What I look for in a work of art is...
I want to learn something.
I want to go to a place that I've never been.
I want an artist to show me something
that I've never even thought about.
If I'm not giving something to myself,
then I don't feel that I've succeeded from a personal level.
Nor have I succeeded from an artistic level.
In the art world, there's a thing called the art context.
You have this place called the gallery or the art institution,
where it's a relatively safe kind of environment,
and I think that there's an opportunity there to play.
But I don't want to play nice.
When I play it's deep play and when I play with the audience,
or as a viewer, I want to play deep.
In other words, there's got to be consequences to the action.
In all interactive work you have to give over.
When I make a work, I go to a place where
my intention is realized.
And I have to stop at that point and say, okay,
it's the viewer's responsibility to take it over from this point
and to complete the work.
