The patent infringement trial between Apple and Samsung began Monday with the jury selection.
Apple says Samsung is producing knockoffs of the iPhone and iPad and is asking $2.5
billion in damages. Samsung says it created many basic smartphone technologies first.
CNN’s Erin Burnett says Apple claims Samsung started changing the design of its phones
after the iPhone came out.
“They say this is what you were doing before, Samsung. Look at your little phones, they
look like blackberries. Then here came the iPhone and now look at the samsung devices.
Apple says ‘doesn’t that look familiar?’”
Ten jurors were selected, but not before several hours of questioning to put together an impartial
jury. All Things D live blogged the jury selection, and highlights the types of questions the
potential jurors were asked.
“Potential jurors are now being asked what phone they have, who makes it and whether
they are considering buying any Samsung or Apple products in the near future. … Jurors
are also being asked how often they blog or post to social media: Facebook, Twitter, even
MySpace.”
CNET writer Josh Lowensohn, who has reported extensively on the splat, speculates on how
the trial will end.
“What’s probably going to happen is that they’re going to shake hands and make a
side deal and settle. And just say, you can use our patents, we can use yours, everybody
gets a little bit of money.” http://cnettv.cnet.com/inside-scoop-apple-samsung-patent-battle/9742-1_53-50128721.html
Opening statements start Tuesday. The trial is expected to last through the end of August.
