[Jazz music] >>Prof Remington
What we have here is a one week workshop for young designers.
We come together with approximately 20 young designers and Massimo Vingelli is the Master
Teacher. And this year we're working on the Jazz Fest
A jazz festival here in Rochester So we are kind of a graphic design and typography
workshop Most of the participants of the workshops
come here wanting to learn more about graphic design and typography
but in the context of working with a master designer.
Vingelli>> Some are very young, some are already professionals
- they have their own office.
So it is a good range and so it based on two things
Knowledge and talent - in a sense. Knowledge is very important, but if they also
have some talent then they also come out with brilliant things.
Participant>> He brought Helvetica into America - practically.
That's a big thing. Almost everyone knows Helvetica - even
if they think they don't know Helvetica... they know Helvetica.
Vignelli>> So this generation instead is completely trained
by the computer. Therefore, they are very good at that.
The discipline, the content... the intangibles, so to speak...
are the same before or after. Participant>>
Just because computers are ht big thing now doesn't mean that design isn't relevant. I
think it is just another medium now. It's translating from blue pencils and cut-and-paste
to computers, but the foundations are still the
same. They have not changed and they will not change.
Prof Remington>> So the archives become the center-piece of
things we do here with students and with other kinds of projects. Using the archive materials
as support materials for the other projects. [Jazz music]
