Hi Everyone, this is Ms. Wilcox and this is sixth and seventh grade science.
And this year, we are going to making a mess - we'll be doing exploration and investigation
into science. We're going to be getting really dirty - in
areas like the garden and we're going to be exploring different life forms like this.
Now there is something wrong with this lifeform and we're going to find that out as we progress
through our studies in Exploration and Investigation into science.
Now in science this year, we're also going to be exploring Rocks.
Not Rocks like when you were in third grade saying "This is a Red Rock, This is a Blue
Rock...." We're going to be findin gout what kinds of
rocks they are and discovering what things can be found due to what types of rocks are
around. For example, who'd like to find Gold? Now
we live in California and there is a lot of Gold in California still.
Some of the rocks that we can find can lead us to Gold and wouldn't that be fun!
Now in my box right here, I have some samples of some rocks that could lead us to Gold.
Here is some quartz formations found in this county and
some other types of rocks that we'll learn about as time goes on in this session and
we are going to find out what they have to do with Gold and how they
might help us find Gold and other precious rocks.
So you may have asked yourself "Why are we in the kitchen of Ms. Wilcox's house?", well
the reason we're here is that alot of chemical changes take place
in the kitchen while you cook and we are going to explore those changes.
Under the glass right here, I have a simple one. This is an acid. And, we all know what
happens when you put a base in with an acid. You get a chemical change.
Now many of you may have done this at home or at school when you were in your early primary
years. This is a really fun experiment, now we are
going to be doing alot of experiments like this. Some are going to be a little more indepth
though, and because of that we are going to need our safety
goggles and sometimes we are going to need protective wear - like this little lab coat.
And, you'll also be signing a Safety Agreement or "Lab Agreement" where you agree to follow
the rules as I say them and try and be as safe as possible, for your own sake.
