Erik: What is a classroom superhero?
Mike: We were very excited that the National Education Association, one of the U.S.’s
largest unions, it’s the teachers union came to us, and we made a website that allowed
teachers to kind of sign in and put their name in and nominate their teachers and say
this is a superhero in our classroom cause that’s what they are really, I mean think
about it, when you were younger and you saw your teacher in the supermarket and you were
like “they’re a real person, this is unbelievable” and you’re so used to them in the classroom
and so it’s like reverse Clark Kent, when Clark Kent has his glasses on during the day
and takes them off to be Superman and the teachers are different, they put their glasses
on in the classroom and be that Superman and handle forty kids, I mean think about it you’re
parents can’t even handle you and your brother or sister, a teacher’s got to handle forty
every hour on the hour so I think that they have superpowers and that was the way of saying
that every comic book lifecycle you know you have the superhero you admire and respect
and they do so good and then there’s a time when they need to ask for help, Spiderman
had to ask for help, Superman had to ask for help, they had to ask for help from the people
that they were saving and it was up to those people to react, right? It was up to those
people to decide to try to save the superhero that they loved even if they didn’t agree
with them 100% or not, they knew that they absolutely needed them, as we see by the new
Batman movies, The Dark Knight and stuff. So, what we wanted to say was that it was
the turning point in the superhero’s story that they’re really looking in on the people
that they’ve been there for and they’ve protected for so many years that they kind
of helped them with the right resources and helped them to continue to have that successful
career, so we’re very excited about that campaign and that project and we hope it raises
some awareness for people to realize how valuable the public education system is.
