Human trafficking. A modern day slave trade
Over 150 years
After the Emancipation Proclamation
and more than 200 years since the Slave Trade Act
There are more slaves in the world today
than at any other time in history. According to the State Department there
are more than
27 million slaves in the world today
Yet as a 2012
Only forty thousand of them have been identified
That means that almost 27 million
have yet to be found
But we know they're out there. Hidden and tucked away
in the shadows in brothels, go-go bars
and strip clubs all over the world. Human trafficking
is the second largest criminal enterprises in the world today
amassing a staggering 32
billion dollars a year in profits
Of the 27 million victims
more than two and a half million are slaves in the commercial sex industry
and half of those
are children. There are between
800,000 and four million new victims of human trafficking
every year. Fifty thousand of those victims
are trafficked into the United States the most which
end up as sex slaves. The average
of those victims is 13
Around the world there is a new victim of
human trafficking every 30 seconds
And only two percent of them will ever
be rescued. Human trafficking has long been
a global epidemic. But now
it has come to our communities and neighborhoods.
The Department of Justice estimates
that in the United States there are more than 250,000 children
current at risk of being trafficked into the sex industry
each year. 250,000 children. Innocent
children. Our children
