[Narrator] In the 2nd Annual OTS Student Design Challenge, design and architecture students
competed to re-imagine the front concourse of the Central YMCA in downtown Toronto.
[Andrew] Ontario Tire Stewardship's objectives are to make sure 100% of Ontario's scrap tires
get recycled—and get recycled into high-value finished products that can be used here in
the province of Ontario. What we want the students to take away from
this experience is a passion and an excitement about tire-derived products—what they can
do and their place in landscape design. That products made from recycled tires are exciting,
are good-looking, and perform better than the alternatives and that they're products
that they want to continue to use in their professional career.
[Narrator] The design will feature innovative tire-derived products, while meeting the needs
of YMCA members and creating a vibrant community space.
[Alex] This project is the natural next step in our environmental program for this site.
We've done a lot of pretty cool environmental initiatives here which included the green
roof which is a huge 10,000 square foot green space we did a few years ago. This next step
through the generosity and partnership through OTS allows us to renew this outdoor tired
space, be fresh, soft, interactive community space using recycled materials in an environmentally
sustainable way.
[Narrator] The students had 2 days to develop their design concepts and 10 minutes to pitch
a panel of experts. The judges looked for ideas that highlighted YMCA values and featured
tire-derived products in innovative and sustainable ways.
The winning design came from the University of Toronto team. David, Jessica and Gregory
presented a design that prioritized accessibility and functionality while bringing new colour
and life to the space.
[Elise] This project will actually be built and they'll be able to claim a role in the
implementation of a real project at a great site in downtown Toronto.
[Narrator] David, Jessica and Gregory will work with a professional Landscape Architect
and the YMCA to take their concept from paper to reality. The community will enjoy the revitalized site in the summer of 2013.
