We have thirty students enrolled in it right now. Each student is below grade level and
the aim of our program here is the catch them back up to where they
should be reading. It may be in a school setting but it's not school and so it's really fun
and it's important because you need to read for everything in life. So the activities
that we run try to focus on a different reading skill in each activity and it all kind of
accumulates together to help them become better readers. They're sitting with him. They're
reading with. They are making sure he is comprehending what he's reading. They're helping him with
sounding out words and technique so that he can get it right. We also have hired six local
teenagers from the community and they act as group leaders and teacher's aides. I basically
help facilitate work and help them strengthen their reading and writing and just act as
a role model in their lives. Reading is a crucial skill and you can not be a life long
learner unless you are able to read fluently and comprehend what you're reading. So the
goal of this program is to get them to the point where they can be successful in the
school themselves and start feeling some success and some pride in their own learning. Without
reading there's not really far that you can get.
