Matt Coles: The fundamental right to marry could be taken away from gay couples in California,
if Proposition 8 passes in November. Hi, I'm Matt Coles. I'm head of the LGBT Project at
the American Civil Liberties Union. We think people should be against Prop 8 because we
think the right to marry is fundamental, and we don't think anybody should have their fundamental
rights taken away. Today, we're ahead in the polls, but the polls also say that the election
is likely to be decided by a group of voters who feel strong emotional pulls in both directions.
Right now, those conflicted voters are coming down against taking away the right to marry,
but they're about to be hit with a huge targeted television advertising blitz.
At the end of this, our opponents say they plan to spend $20 million. If that advertising
blitz works, we're going to lose the election. Please, if you have friends or family in California,
call them and talk to them about Proposition 8. Remind them that gay people are members
of our community, and that no part of our community ought to have its fundamental rights
taken away. Ask them to vote no on Proposition 8. Please go to www.noonprop8.com to see what
else you can do to help. Please don't let the fundamental right to marry be taken away
from gay couples. Thank you.
