We've always been told that we have two choices when getting a job- if you want to make money,
you go into a for-profit corporation, if you want to help people, you work for a non-profit,
but you probably won't make money. It's a standard that's led a lot of capable and creative
people devoting their whole lives to a traditional business because they think that charity is
a risk not worth taking. As a result, we're missing out on a lot of brainpower that could
be working towards solving global problems. But you don't have to do charity if you want
to help people. You can make money while giving back to those around you. It's through a new
form of business called social enterprise. Social entrepreneurs use business strategies
to generate profits just like other business people, but more importantly, they use these
profits to fulfill social missions. Although the phrase "social enterprise" isn't mainstream,
they've been making headlines. A great example is Goldiblox, a toy company founded to inspire
more girls to become engineers. Their ad featuring little girls making amazing contraptions recently
went viral on YouTube. And the coolest part is that Georgia Tech students are going on
to create their own social enterprises. Three Tech grads have founded TOHL, a startup Chile
company that brings water to remote areas by helicopter that would normally receive
water by daily truckloads. This saves time, money, and in case of an earthquake, lives.
But a social enterprise doesn't have to be global. We also have them here at home. Hi,
my name is Nathan Black, and I'm the co-founder of Village Defense. Right after graduating
from Georgia Tech, I set out with the goal of empowering neighbors in communities to
share information with each other in real time. The amazing thing to me about social
enterprises are that the profits you can make as a company is directly linked to how much
good you're doing in the world. So it's an incredible opportunity for students to get
involved with Enterprise to Empower and help spread this movement. I'm Angela, and I'm
president of Enterprise to Empower. Hi, my name is Sabrina, and I'm social media manager
with Enterprise to Empower. At Enterprise to Empower, or En2Em, we believe that every
one of us students can make something of our social responsibility and feel really good
about it. That's why we're hosting our third annual Social Enterprise Career Fair. We will
be bringing socially minded companies, nonprofits, and startups to campus. Last year we brought
cool organizations like Plywood People, Ace Loans, Teach for America, and Medshare. Check
out our website for more information on registration. It's your opportunity to work for what matters.
Most importantly, this is an amazing opportunity for you to combine what you're most passionate
about with what you're really good at to create value for people.
