WARREN JOHNSTON: Could this possibly be the best miniature
sculpt ever?
[ROCK GUITAR MUSIC]
WARREN JOHNSTON: Hey guys, and welcome to a brand new season
of "On the Table," the show where we take a look at what's
been going on in the weird and wonderful
world of hobby nerdom.
Now you may have notice that there's been a couple of
changes to the show not the least of which is that you can
now catch us exclusively on Geek and Sundry.
That's right, "On the Table" has taken its place alongside
other great shows such as "Table Top," "The Guild," and
"Written by a Kid," as well as their brilliant new comedy
"Space Janitors." Be sure to check that out.
We're also gearing on the table towards a greater level
of community involvement.
So if you know of something you think we should cover, be
sure to submit it us at this website.
Ready to have some fun?
Let's kick off with a look at war gaming, and what better
game to start with than "Infinity"?
And then we'll go beyond.
Yeah, "Infinity" is a war game which has been experiencing a
meteoric rise, and this is a firm favorite with us here at
Beasts of War.
So when the creator sent us an exclusive peek at a new mini,
we just had to share with you guys.
Meet Ajax, the new hero for the Aleph faction.
Named after the ancient Greek hero, Ajax started out as a
prototype of Achilles--
one of the other heroes from the Aleph faction.
But he has since battled and pummeled his way through so
many enemies that he has made a name for himself, and now
leads fire teams to victory on field of battle.
Even for Infinity's stunning range of miniatures, this guy
looks awesome.
We've all been blown away by this sculpt, and some in the
studio have even offered the words, this might be the best
miniature we have ever seen.
But what do you guys think?
Anyway, this isn't the only goodie to appear for
"Infinity." Last month, we saw the launch of their new
campaign book, "Campaign Paradiso." This book provides
you with all the rules for a great narrative campaign with
all sorts of challenging new scenarios, as well as
introducing a brand new faction, the Tohaa, an
advanced alien race specializing in biotech.
When it comes to superheroes, few are quite as awesome as
the Dark Knight.
Now, Knight Models are bringing the cape crusader to
the table top in a new Batman miniatures game.
Based around the excellent video game of "Arkham City,"
this game will allow you to take to the streets of Gotham
as either its staunchest defenders or
its most evil villains.
Batman has a rich background to draw upon, which is only
enhanced by that gritty character from the designs of
the Arkham games.
So it's great to see these characters getting their own
miniatures and rules.
This is quite possibly the miniatures game that many
geeks have dreamed of.
And I'm sure it's not just the Beasts of War crew who are
freaking out over this.
-I am vengeance.
I am night.
I am Batsam.
[END VIDEO PLAYBACK]
WARREN JOHNSTON: Uh, yeah.
"Warpath," that epic sci-fi miniatures game from Mantic
has moved on to version 2.0 of its rules.
Forge Fathers, Corporation, Marauders, and nigh Veer-myn
will clash in the depths of outer space aboard mighty
starships around plants rich with vital resources.
Or on a six by four piece of MDF in your basement, not
quite so rich in resources, but still providing plenty of
entertainment.
Some rules have been changed to make them fair, and a new
unit activation system is in there to replicate
the chaos of battle.
New rules also mean excuses to buy new models, such as the
newboys on the block, the Corporation Enforcers.
And the rules themselves are free to download from the
Mantic website, so make sure your head on over there and
grab yourself a copy.
A few days ago, a video started to appear on some of
the forums promoting what we can only describe as a new
miniatures game set the weird, wild west called "Wild West
Exodus." We're hunting down the details at this very
moment, and we'll bring you more as we get it.
In the meantime, I'm just praying for a
zombie Wyatt Earp.
Our friends over at Spartan Games have brought us battles
by land, sea, and air.
But now they're expanding their worlds once more to
bring us some brand new games.
Our favorite of these has to be still "Dystopian Legions."
Set in the steampunk world of Dystopian wars, Legions will
allow you to step outside of your massive ships or tanks
and fight it out with some 28 millimeter foot soldiers.
From what we've seen, these new miniatures will continue
to possess the world's signature steampunk designs,
with even a steam-propelled jet bike on display.
I want me one of those.
If you play Spartan's other games, then don't fret.
There'll be something for you too.
Firestorm Armada is going planet-side and we'll have you
playing with 10 millimeter tanks and walkers
in Firestorm Invasion.
While Uncharted Seas could be receiving a skirmish game
called The Forbidden Isles.
Myths and Legends are also making an appearance with Of
Gods and Men, allowing you to recreate Jason and the
Argonaut battles.
Nice.
And now we're going to move on from the World of War gaming
to look at some awesome new card games.
We start with that pinnacle of geek culture--
Star Wars, my favorite three films ever.
SPEAKER 1: Warren, were there not six films?
WARREN JOHNSTON: Those were not the films we waited for.
SPEAKER 1: Those were not the films we waited for.
WARREN JOHNSTON: Move along.
Anyway, thanks to Fantasy Flight Games you can now take
control of your favorite "Star Wars" moments in Star Wars--
The Card Game.
This living card game sees two players pitched against one
another as either the dark or light side of the force,
giving you control of those iconic starships and
characters from the original three films.
The dark side player tries to destroy those last remaining
rebels, while the light side struggles to return justice to
the galaxy.
All the while, time will be running out as the Deathstar
dial advances, meaning players will constantly be feeling the
pressures of time.
So you think you know the ultimate combination of heroes
from the Marvel universe?
Well how about you test your team of superheroes in
Legendary, the new Marvel Card Game that, well, could have
been just what you were waiting for.
In Legendary you create your own deck of mighty heroes, and
pit them against villains before coming face to face
with the mastermind.
It looks fantastic so far.
It's got brilliant art work, and it's been getting rave
reviews from a number of prominent names
in the gaming world.
And you can check out the rules for free
via the game's website.
So toddle off and go and take a look.
It's OK, I'll be here when you get back.
Board gaming is an integral part of the tabletop gaming
hobby, and where better to start than with a classic game
of dungeon crawling adventure?
Wizards of the Coast are returning us to those old days
of games gone by, with their re-release of a classic
Dungeons and Dragons board game simply titled "Dungeon!"
The aim of the game is easy.
Delve deep into a maze-like dungeon, grab all the treasure
you can, and make it out without being eaten by a
monster on the way.
This board game looks to be a must for any fantasy fan, and
could even be the perfect way to introduce your mates to a
selection of D&D related games, whether it be the RPG
itself or the ever popular board game Dungeon Command.
The rules are available to download from the Wizards of
the Coast website, so grab your sword and spellbook, and
hold on to those stolen family jewels as you explore
"Dungeon!"
I've always fancied myself as a bit of an empire builder,
and I think we might have found the board game that can
test my skills as a supreme leader.
Clash of Cultures from Z-Man Games puts you in charge of a
small settlement, and sets you the task of creating the
greatest civilization the world has ever known.
The man behind this board game, Christian Marcussen, has
already crafted a wonderful story driven board game by the
name of Merchants and Marauders, which was a big hit
with gamers.
This pedigree points to Clash of Cultures being just as
good, especially as it looks as if no expense has been
spared on the components.
The game is out this month, so will you explore, fight, and
philosophize your way to the history books or fall before
your enemies and be erased from the records?
When it comes to tales of brutal combat and double
dealings, there are few that can stand up to the popular TV
show "Spartacus"--
the show about that legendary leader of slaves in the days
of ancient Rome not wearing very much.
Well now, Gale Force Nine are inviting you to step into the
arena with their new board game "Spartacus, A Game of
Blood and Treachery.
In this game, you and your friends take on the role of
the leader of one of the great houses of ancient Rome as you
scheme and manipulate your way to make your house supreme.
We managed to get a copy of this game in the studios, and
I think it's safe to say it might be our
favorite game of the year.
So whether you're a hardcore fan of the show, or just a
board game nut, it's time for you to head out into the arena
to win glory, freedom, power, and glory.
Let us leave this normal life behind and become awesome
characters in our own stories as we take a look at the new
developments in the world of RPGs.
First up, we return to the dark universe of Warhammer 40K
with Fantasy Flights upcoming new rule set--
"Only War." Previously, you may have been a space marine,
you may have been an inquisitor's henchmen, you may
even have been a treacherous servant of chaos,--
and I've met one or two of those.
But now, for the first time, you can take on the role of
the imperial guard soldier serving in the hectic battles
of the Spinward Front.
Yes, folks, this could be the first RPG which ends in three
minutes when you get your head blown off after sticking it
over the top.
The imperial guard might seem like a faceless mass of
soldiers --that's because they are.
However, they contain endless possibilities for creating
some great characters and stories.
Do you want to play as a [? grizzled ?]
veteran, the soldier who's been everywhere and seen
thousands die in battle, or the raw conscript, freshly
plucked from their home world?
The choice is yours.
But remember, don't let the commissar stand behind you.
Grant Gould is a fantastic artist who penned the
successful comic, "Wolves of Oden," and has created works
for plenty of different geek-related subjects.
However, now, he's turning his hand to role playing games
with his first creation, "Blade Raiders."
"Blade Raiders" readers did extremely well on Kickstarter
early in the year, and Grant is now down to the hard slog
of making it all count.
It's set in a typical fantasy world, but with a few little
twists to make it stand out.
As human adventurers, you have no classes or skills, but
instead learn as you play.
Taking inspiration from the thinking behind video games
such a "Fable," if you decide you want to be good with a
sword or an axe, well you better start using one.
Talents are then unlocked through experience and
adventure helping you become a deadly warrior and a bane of
all who stand before you.
And now, it's give-away time.
And in this episode, with the help of our friends over at
waylandgames.co.uk, we're giving away three of our
favorite games of the year-- "Descent," "Spartacus," and
"X-Wing." And all you have to do to be in with the shot of
winning this great collection is post a comment to below
here on YouTube.
And we will be picking a winner at random on Thursday,
the 22nd of November.
Feel free to enter from any part of planet Earth, as
Wayland Games will ship globally.
As cool as all these things are, they are by no means the
only game out there, and community funding has totally
opened up the possibilities of tabletop gaming allowing
developers to start working on projects they might not
otherwise have been able to.
With so many projects it might seem a little difficult to
decide where you want to pledge your hard earned cash,
so we thought we'd bring you some of the projects and
start-ups which you might want to take a look at.
First up, we have the Kickstarter from Antimatter to
get their awesome looking game "ShadowSea" up and running.
With "DeepWars" already successfully funded, we can't
wait to see what this Kickstarter
project could produce.
But better be quick, as its closing deadline is fast
approaching.
Next, we have "Storm the Castle," a semi-cooperative
fantasy board game where you take control of the bodies
attacking the hero stronghold.
Yeah, show those good guys who's boss.
Also at Kickstarter we find Professor Pugnacious'
Portfolio of Perils, Pugilism, and Perfidy." This is a
deck-building game with a stylish steampunk setting.
And finally, Indiegogo will allow us to venture into
"Mayhem Mines," a treasure hunting card game with a
fantasy setting.
With its colorful and distinctive art style, this
could definitely prove to be a fun little game to try out.
Well, there we have it guys.
I hope you've enjoyed this episode of "On the Table".
However, if we still haven't satisfied your appetite for
all things gaming, then remember you can find us at
beastsofwar.com and of course on Geek and Sundry.
Before we go, we will leave you with the details of some
upcoming events.
If you want to let us know about any events, whether it
be a large convention or even a local gaming day, then be
sure to visit this link, Well, that's it for this episode,
but we will be back in two weeks.
Until then, you have been watching "On the Table."
