>>>Dr. Margileth: One of the more modern approaches to breast cancer is to try to do reconstruction
either at the time of the primary surgery or shortly thereafter. In a case of patients
who have larger tumors that may need mastectomy and radiation therapy most plastic surgeons
feel comfortable waiting about six to nine months to do appropriate reconstructive surgery.
At that time, the skin changes from the radiation therapy have basically resolved, the healing
issues are not as much of an issue. The blood counts have returned from the chemotherapy
effect and in general, at that point in time, the results of the reconstruction are very
good.
