Well we have been very involved with the human rights issues in care settings
because obviously what we do is central to maintaining people's dignity,
and obviously as well, people who are quite vulnerable, they need protection,
particularly human rights protection. So I think one of the reasons
why I decided to be involved in the Inquiry is because the Inquiry is dealing with something
that's central to good quality care and the protection of human rights.
Well I hope this Inquiry will first of all benchmark where we are
in terms of human rights and care services in people's homes, and
when it's done that benchmarking exercise, we'll be much clearer
about where the issues are and we'll be able then to develop responses
that in the fullness of time will improve the human rights of people who receive services.
I would say to people who are involved in this Inquiry, be as honest and open as possible.
What we need is not to hear what people think people want to hear, but what we need is the real story.
So I appeal to everybody to be open, to tell it like it is, because in doing that
we'll be able to frame a very good Inquiry that will deliver some tangible outcomes in the future.
