How to Caramelize an Onion
Welcome to the kitchen, I'm just finishing chopping some onions so I can show you how
to caramelize them. We're chopping them lengthwise this way so we can separate them
out into small slices. Now that we have our onions sliced, we're going to go ahead and
add about a tablespoon of olive oil to our pan. This is just the right amount for one
medium size onion. And you'll want to roll that around in the pan to make sure we get
the whole pan coated and we're going to let that get hot until it ripples. Now that
we have our oil hot over medium heat, we're ready to add the onions. You'll hear a nice
sizzle and that'll reassure you that you have your oil to the right temperature. After
we toss that in, we'll put in a pinch of salt, if you'd like to measure that's
about a half a teaspoon for one onion. And then you'll toss those around to make sure
they're evenly coated. As you can see we have a nice caramel brown on our onions, they
are tender. It's taken about 15 to 20 minutes to get them to this stage. If you'd like
to speed up the process, you can throw on the lid. That'll save you about 5 minutes.
