The provision, maintenance and improvement of public roads leading to a safe and efficient
transport infrastructure, within County Cavan, are one of the key functions of Cavan County
Council. More than 50% of the Councils annual budget is expended on this programme.
There are over 3,000km of roads in the county. The road network is subdivided into three
categories – National,
Regional and Local.
The National routes, while representing just over 4% of total road length, carry the majority
of traffic. Regional roads, linking the main towns in
Cavan, make up 13% of the total, while the remaining 82% consist of a network of local
roads serving the rest of the county.
Major investment has been made over the last decade in upgrading road infrastructure throughout
the County. Design is carried out in the council’s Road Design Section with construction, supervision
and quality control carried out by County Council staff.
The
Motor Tax office is one of the busiest offices in the county, dealing with over 60,000 customers
each year.
