Hi, my name is Buma.
I`m one of the several thousand people
who live and work in Abuja.
That`s the capital city of Nigeria.
I love my city.
I think it’s the best place to live,
and it looks really good at night.
But a lot of things have changed since I moved here.
There are more cars on the roads,
there`s a lot more noise,
the city is not as clean as it used to be,
but I can live with that.
Right now I am working with a local media company
producing a TV show.
It`s a small startup company,
and like many others we have limited resources.
I work from home mostly,
and ideally I put in twelve hours each day at work.
Between my laptop and my mobile phone
I get most of my work done.
Work is hard, but fun.
But on days like this it only gets harder!
The power supply is the biggest problem I have.
There`s almost no guarantee
that I will get the power I need to get my work done,
when I need it.
Still, I have to get the job done.
So I got myself a gasoline generator.
There are millions of other people like me in cities all around the country
who depend on gasoline generators to run their businesses.
When I sit and think of the amount of pollution we are creating, I worry.
Electricity is important,
it keeps my city alive.
But I fear that in a couple of years
this alternative source of electricity will kill my city.
With global concerns about pollution,
and global warming on the increase
I believe that my city can make a change for the better.
I believe renewable energy is the future of electricity generation.
Solar Energy is still being experimented with around here,
but not too many people believe
that this source of power is sustainable.
Personally, I think solar energy is going to help a lot.
I don`t see us running out of sunlight any time soon.
We are in the tropics after all.
I hope someday more people around here
will appreciate alternative power sources
that are still healthy for the environment,
like solar energy, like I do.
But solar units still cost a lot of money.
And most people, like me, are trying not to give out a lot of money,
and since I have to get the job done first,
I think I am going to stick with my gasoline generator.
For now ...
