PNC Neighborhood Wishlist: Eating Light, Eating Right Working at the Maria Kaupas Center has
been a life changing experience for me. It's really really heartwarming to be at the ground
level of something that the community needs and that is really going to address a lot
of the issues of the kids. We came up with the idea for Eating Light, Eating Right because
we knew that the students that attend the school that feeds into our center, over 90%
of them are eligible for free and reduced lunches so the poverty issue is big here.
There are not a lot of options for healthy grocery shopping around here. This program
has really opened up the kids eyes to healthy eating, new foods, different ways to prepare
foods. PNC money helped provide all of the food products for class so that was huge because
spices are expensive, meat's expensive dairy's expensive. And we didn't have money in our
budget for that so we couldn't have done it without the grant. We feel very fortunate
because PNC kick-started a program that will now grow into something bigger and better.
These are great kids and they need opportunities and I just feel so fortunate that I can help
them try and get some of these new opportunities.
