Sight is precious. But children in developing countries are four times more
likely to be blind than children
in the richest countries.
Tigiste is six years old. Even though she's so small and malnourished she
could pass for two.
She's also blind.
Vitamin A deficiency is the single greatest cause of childhood blindness
and it reduces a child's ability to fight off common infections like
diarrhea and measles.
Yet when children have access to a healthy diet or even just a few simple vitamin A
drops
blindness and other illnesses can be prevented.
But this is sadly not the case for Tigiste. Poor,
malnourished and an orphan. A kind aunt took her in despite being desperately poor
herself.
The hardest thing to accept is that Tigiste's blindness could have been
avoidable.
That she might have been able to see right now if only she had had a simple
cost-effective treatment.
The type of treatment that children living in Plan communities have
access to.
Instead, she spends her days
in darkness.
There are terrors around every corner.
In the developing world, disabled children like Tigiste suffer even more.
Ninety-eight percent of them will never go to school. There's no money for
medical attention.
Little hope for the future. They have few options.
Many will find themselves on the street begging for money.
And the solution is within our reach.
So her aunt is trying to teach her to help with the pottery.
Her aunt knows that the day will come when she can no longer look out for
Tigiste
and she's worried her own health is not good.
I'm looking after her every second.
I'm afraid of what will happen if I'm not there to care for her.
She could fall into the well, or the fire,
or worse. Sponsors like you help us fight to ensure that all children
