My name's Michele Banks and we're here at the Prairie Center's art show to look at this year's work.
I'm a teacher at Link and I've been doing this for many years
and the art teachers over at 54 are always excited about this very
professional display that the kids get to show off their work.
All 27 schools in the district are involved and 3 students get chosen
from each of the particular schools to
have their work on display. So there's over 90 works here.
We have our grade levels
from 1st through 8th grade
present here. There's a variety of different techniques on display here that really
show the wonderful
talent of the students and the talent of the art teachers in District 54...
Ranging from pencil to watercolor to...
printmaking...
to markers, to painting. So it is a really nice
range of materials.
At each different different grade level we do have essential outcomes that students are
required to meet
and you can see that here as far as, you know, your drawing skills, your print-making skills.
and how much further they progress every year.
And it's very apparent. I'm sure you'll be able to tell the grade levels here but some are so good that you
have to second-guess yourself so we have a really talented group.
I think the kids get very excited about this one because this and the Schaumburg Art Show
are the only two community places that we can display work... that we really do
display work besides the school
so kids get really excited if they get chosen for the Prairie Center art show or the Schaumburg
Library show.
And this one feels more like a real gallery so the kids get
absolutely excited and they really work hard for those three empty frames per
school that we get
so it is quite a big deal for them.
I love that the students, regardless of their age level, have this love and passion
for art so I'm really grateful that District 54 supports the arts and shows
like this.
I can tell you enough about how much the parents appreciate the arts and how
much it supports the curriculum.
And the kids just have a blast, so I am very lucky to happen to enjoy
my career as well as my job working with the kids.
What's exciting about this year is that it's the first year we're going to hold
a reception where the student artists and their parents and families and
community members
can come see the show during hours of 6 to 8pm on March 20th.
They'll be giving ribbons and they'll be taking photos with their teachers and
their parents and whoever comes with them.
I encourage everyone to come out this year because for the kids it'll feel like a real
art show, so the more people that come, I think they'll get that feel, but also
the work is just amazing
and if the community can support our our program and just see how wonderful we're doing
people will notice how important it is to keep the program up as well as support
their children doing art at home.
The Prairie Center art show reception will be on the night of March 20th between the
hours of 6 and 8pm. But if you can't make it out, the show will be up
throughout the entire month of March.
