Can I host a Minecraft server? Could I host my own, personal Minecraft server?
Why do you want to host a Minecraft server?
So that I can have my own Minecraft world to play in. And I can let some friends join
in.
You can get the minecraft_server.exe off their website. You can run a Minecraft server with
settings found on the Minecraft.net site.
Or you can build a Minecraft server based the latest bukkit.org release.
What are the advantages of Bukkit?
Bukkit has fewer plugins and runs faster than the default Minecraft server setting.
If you’re going to run Minecraft on yoru server, it needs to be placed on a dedicated
folder on the server, near the top level.
I’ve heard you need to have the latest Java version to avoid problems.
You may want to run nocheatplus on the server so that other people cannot use Minecraft
hacks.
No, I may want to run those hacks myself. And I’m happy to let them run hacks myself.
You need to add a white list to the server to add your friends to the access list.
I might end up with a lot of friends on the server.
If you post the server on planetminecraft’s server list, you could get advertising on
the server.
I don’t want advertising or spam.
You can limit chat spam with the StopTalkingAutoBan.
Then I’ll just need to keep the Minecraft server limited to just a few friends. I’m
glad to know, though, that I could set up my own Minecraft server.
How are you going to get money to pay for the server?
Why would I need that?
You could ask for donations to help pay for the electricity to run the server or pay for
upgraded hardware or software licenses.
Where could I get advertising that would generate money?
Adcraft has in-game advertising. Or you could just run the server on an older machine that
doesn’t cost much to run.
If I wanted to run it on a slower machine, I’d stay with the network lag connecting
to the main servers.
