This is the Dings Park, it's all big and messy and has loads of thorns and stinging nettles.
What we're trying to do is basically rebuild it back to it's natural form..
To renovate, design and create a community garden within a part of Bristol called the Dings.
We felt it was a really useful place to come because it has a real village feel about it...
...it's a very distinct little community and identity and people are really proud of it here.
We arrived here about a week and a half ago to find rubbish, broken things...
...a general dumping ground if you like.
You couldn't literally walk from one end to the other.
The first day you could see the biggest difference at the end, because...
...everything was cut back, brambles everywhere, and nettles.
Amongst themselves they kind of identified whether they were creative or...
...if they liked the physical, kind of manual work.
There's quite a bit of design in terms of what they wanted the garden to look like.
And then each morning what they would do is basically divvy up the roles for the day.
Towards the end of cutting it all down, we actually seen what we had...
...so we could design where the path was going, where we could have flower beds.
We finished building the pathway that was originally what we needed.
We tried to make it wide enough for like wheelchairs and buggies and everything.
We're putting some plants back in to show it's natural former glory.
Make sure it's a suitable environment for the kids to come back into...
So the kids can have a better place to play and more freedom.
I've been working with the young people to create a piece for the Dings mural.
Yeah, they've been a really good help, em, I can't say that enough.
There's one boy who was just doing loads of stuff and kind of really thinking about...
...changing bits, going "we could do that", so that's always good to see.
They as a group over the period of the programme sustain themselves...
...and how they manage to support each other through the programme...
...through teaching each other, learning from different things.
Some of us didn't get on at one point, and then this brought us closer.
If one of us had like, a problem, someone would help.
'Cos there's so many people that have issues that you've been through...
...and you can just go up and say "well I need a bit of help with this..." can you help me?
You need that, 'cos you need them to give you some support.
As a finale for the programme, if you like, we would have an open day...
...an open garden session, where we'd invite the community to come along
and have some food, various things, and then we would say...
..."this is yours" Our young people have made this for you...
...it is your garden, so hopefully now it's something...
...you're gonna be able to take on and love and enjoy.
Yes I think it's nice for young kids to give up their time...
...instead of hanging around, and spent some time down here...
...and I think it's wonderful, good for the future for them, you know...
...so I will keep an eye over it.
All of this was all-round stinging nettles...
...people round here like English and Somalians
You would come down here to climb the tree now.
The NCS experience can completely change how a young person sees what they can do.
It's about unlocking the potential in them.
You feel good in yourself after helping other people...
...and give something back to the community.
It's helped me a lot, and I'm just trying to change my life round, and do it for the best.
