Presenter: The winner of the Australian Apprentice of
the Year is Patrick Janes from Victoria.
Patrick Janes: It's a huge honour, and a dream come true.
Ever since I got into the process of the application I thought it would be so incredible to win
it, and it really is a dream come true. I am actually about to take over my boss'
business, he's retiring and I am taking it on. I always wanted to do it at some stage,
maybe a few years down the track but I'm 23 and I am taking on a business and I am excited.
I can't wait to get right into it. If you have something that you love doing,
hands on type stuff, have a crack. A great way to start is a school-based apprenticeship,
it gives you a good look into your industry, gets you a foot in the door.
The Australian Training Awards finalist week has been one of the most memorable weeks of
my life. It has been put on by the Australian Training Awards team and it is run absolutely
flawlessly. It has been so great to speak to a lot of passionate people.
I'd like to thank the University of Ballarat for my training, I would not be here without
them and the high level of skills I have developed through them. My parents, mum and dad, for
encouraging me to learn to Weld and be creative when I was a little kid, and everyone back
home supporting me, family, friends, everyone just thank you very much.
