My name is Risa, and I work at the Wichita Children's Home in Wichita, Kansas.
And i think a good child care worker probably has at least three things:
warmth and compassion, really a sense to be able to look at a youth and say
"If this was me, how would I want to be treated?" and to be able to see their circumstances.
I think they have the ability to have good boundaries.
And in that, they're not too professional but they are not too personal with them.
It's like, how do you care about them and walk alongside them,
without slipping into those not-good boundaries? And I think probably the third thing is
that I would highlight out of a lot of things is probably confidence,
a desire within themselves to be better. So they go out, and they look for, um,
they don't wait for their agency to teach them. They go out and they have a hunger to
look for information about how they can be better
tomorrow than they are today.
