I find a country, and I don't think that Britain is by any means unique in this
where there is a growing concern about the lack of progress towards peace
Matthew Gould, British Ambassador to Israel, sits with us this morning for a warning call
In order to warn of the danger in Israel's declining reputation around the world
Anyone who cares about Israel's standing in the world should be concerned about the erosion of popular support
We meet the Ambassador following an incident between the two states
During the heat of the Olympics, an event representing the values of friendship and goodwill more than any other
An incident arose creating great tensions between Israel and Britain
The BBC had set a special page for each country participating in the games
Each country also had its capital city marked. Only the Israeli page had no mention of its capital
This in addition to Palestine's page having East Jerusalem marked as the designated Palestinian capital
And it doesn't end there
The BBC had a representative image for each country
The British network chose an image of a soldier confronting a Palestinian for its Israeli page
At the same time when the image chosen for Syria, for example, was of innocent children outside a mosque
The Prime Minister's Office decided to go to battle and following the pressure on the network the picture was changed
Even still, according to the BBC, Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel
It is simply the place of residence of the Israeli government
It would be wrong for me to try and either explain their actions, for that you'd need to speak to the BBC
But what I would say is this - that Israel is now seen as the Goliath and it's the Palestinians that are seen as the David
And the change of perception according to Gould also brings a change in tendency
Support for Israel is starting to erode and that's not about
these people on the fringe who are shouting loudly and calling for boycotts and all the rest of it
The interesting category are those members of parliament in the middle
The majority
And in that group I see a shift
Gould, a London born Jew, defines himself as an Israel supporter
Maybe it is for that reason that he wishes to speak to us clearly about the situation
Israelis might wake up in ten years time and suddenly find
That the level of understanding in the international community has suddenly changed
That the level of patience for continuing the status quo has reduced
The State of Israel invests great resources in Hasbara (propaganda), sensing that a great effort is needed
In order to succeed in getting the Israeli messages across facing a hostile world
The problem is not Hasbara. The sensogram, the [majority of the] British public, they may not be expert
but they're not stupid
And they see a stream of announcements about new building in settlements
They read stories about what's going on in the West Bank
They read about the restrictions in Gaza
The substance of what's going on is really what's driving this
It is possible to argue about the treatment against Israel
but it is difficult to deny what is seen in the mirror set in front of us
