NEW TONIGHT AT SIX.
IF YOU'RE USUALLY HOT AND
SWEATY
AND BREATH HEAVILY...YOU'RE A
PRIME TARGET FOR MOSQUITOES.
THE SHELBY COUNTY HEALTH
DEPARTMENT CONFIRMS THE WEST
NILE VIRUS IS ALREADY HERE. SO A
QUICK REMINDER ON HOW
YOU CAN STAY SAFE...
FROM ABC24'S JACKIE OROZCO.
SHE'S LIVE IN THE OPERATIONS
CENTER
WITH THE DETAILS.
SEEMS LIKE MOSQUITO SEASON
COMES EARLIER AND EARLIER EVERY
YEAR. AND THIS YEAR IT HAS COME
WITH A VENGEANCE.
BUT THERE ARE CERTAIN NATURAL
SMELLS THAT WILL REPEL THOSE
PESKY
MOSQUITOES.
Anything that holds water is a
perfect breeding
ground for mosquitoes.
"you think about your planters,
your plant dish
underneath, that's a common
place for
mosquitoes to be breeding on
your patio or near your
house."
Terminix's pest expert found a
simple way to repel mosquitoes.
It goes a little further than
your average spray repellant.
"they use on all natural
ingredients from things like
cinnamon oil, peppermint oil,
canola oil which are all
derived by citronella plant oil
and we found in certain
mixtures they'll repel about
95-percent of mosquitoes."
Not bad...considering Shelby
County had one of
the worst seasons for West Nile
in 2011.
This year....it's popping up
even earlier.
33 mosquitoes tested positive
for the West Nile
virus across the state of
Tennessee.
Half were in Shelby County. The
health department started
spraying for mosquitoes but if
you want extra protection, there
are
gadgets that might come in
handy.
"we have the big one right here.
You can actually drag
around on your yard and covers
up to 2-thousand
feet."
MOSQUITOES TEND TO BITE PEOPLE
ON
THEIR ANKLES AND LEGS. BUG
