Dr. Q, BellaireER. Two million children die every year with diarrheal-type
infections. Cyclospora gastrointeritis is one of those types of infections. It's caused
by a parasitic protozoa. That means it's multi-cellular as opposed to a bacteria or a virus. It infects
thousands of kids every year in America alone. We had 16,200 infections of cyclospora infection.
We've had a recent outbreak in Houston. That's why we're talking about this today.
Mainly presents with contaminated foods--fruits and vegetables. It's endemic in 27 tropical
countries. Make sure you wash carefully your fruits and vegetables. It'll present with
this cyclic-type diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever, weight loss and can last up to two
months. Tip of the day: wash your fruits and vegetables
carefully. I'm Dr. Q. I care for you.
