Hello, and welcome to Insider’s Health TV. Where we bring you the freshest happenings
in the world of medicine without the quack propaganda. Today we’ll be talking about
Maryanne Godboldo, a Detroit mom who was caught in a standoff with a SWAT team. What was her
crime? Well, Child Protective Services wasn’t happy that she refused to treat her daughter
with psychiatric medications, and instead opted for holistic methods.
Not long ago, Maryanne Godboldo decided, with the blessing of her doctor, to take her daughter
off a pharmaceutical treatment recommendation for psychosis. It seemed to be worsening her
child’s symptoms, and she decided instead to treat the condition naturally. According
to the family, after the psychotropic drugs were stopped, her daughter began to improve
significantly. But that wasn’t good enough for protective services.
CPS went after Maryanne, even though she had voluntarily started the regimen of prescriptions.
Her choice was to get her children back on drugs, which had been voluntary in the first
place, or lose custody altogether. When Godboldo refused either, a SWAT-style team arrived
at the house, busting down the door and capturing the child. We should mention that they brought
a TANK and assault weapons to get this done.
But this story seems to have a somewhat happy ending, or at least as happy as can be now,
when a judge dropped all the charges on Maryanne. Unfortunately, as of this episode being written,
her daughter is still in the custody of the state of Michigan. So we’ll keep our eye
on this incredibly narrow-minded story, and hope that the state realizes you can’t punish
a dedicated mother for trying everything she could to improve her daughter’s condition.
