Taiwanese WiMax vendor Global Mobile opened its first store in Taiwan's capital on Tuesday,
as the island's WiMax companies rush to launch its networks ahead of a government deadline.
Global Mobile is already offering WiMax wireless broadband service in the Hsinchu (Shin-chu)
Science Park, Taiwan's Silicon Valley, but it plans to continue rolling out that network
and its new Taipei system this year. WiMax service for Hsinchu City will be up and running
in February, while the Taipei service will expand over the next few months for full coverage
by the middle of this year.
The company's move into Taipei comes ahead of a government imposed deadline for every
WiMax license winner in Taiwan to launch. The license stipulates networks should be
up and running by March of this year.
The government's M-Taiwan program aims to ensure people all over Taiwan, including remote
mountain villages and offshore islands, will be able to access the Internet wirelessly.
