My name is Juan Orjuela. I am a biology major and I am going to be sophomore this coming
fall at UWM. Since a very young age I had a passion for animals. Growing up, I never
changed my mind about I've always been very set about being a veterinarian. Are you guys
all ready? Yep, we are so ready. Which way are we going? Do Hobel, she's a professor I am working
with. This is her lab for frog research. She does all kinds of research with vibration
and visual aids with different types of frogs. She was always wondering what was causing
all of this. And do the vibrations of the calls of the individual frogs when you see
them call it ripples the water so she wanted to see if any of that affected the way they
mated, how they found their mate. This is the male and this is the female. What we try
to find is pairs of frogs and we bring them here and test them and record them and analyze
them. Yeah, this is pretty much it. This is the size of the pond. We have an infrared
light here and camera. We usually have speakers where we play different calls. This blue line
here is where we set the frog. That's the starting point of the frog where it's dropped off and
then it starts going towards the call and jumps right there and goes towards the speaker.
The end result is having a picture with an actual path of where the frog went so it becomes
like we can start seeing patterns. I feel like I can feel what they are feeling sometimes.
It's weird. I know it sounds weird but I've always had that feeling and it's never gone
away. And that's why I just love animals. I just feel like I just want to be a voice
for those animals some how. That's why I want to be a vet.
