The most important reason of buying a SLR camera is the image quality.
This means that image quality is better compared to compact cameras, photos are nicer.
If you have bought SLR camera with a 18-55mm kit lens, you can see that the images
are much better but there's still something missing.
Today we'll talk about lenses every SLR owner should have: the 50mm f/1.8
The first reason for this is that you can take photos in poor lighting conditions.
Beautiful photos in dim light
Why is this lens better in dim light than the kit lens? The reason is simple.
The f-number which stands for aperture is 1.8. This means that more light can enter the sensor
faster and we get a shorter shutter speed compared to f/3 or even f/5.6.
We have managed to take a nice bright photo here in Ahhaa centre which is dimly lit.
I even didn't have to push the ISO sensitivity up very much.
We had to increase ISO a little despite using f/1.8 aperture.
If I was using a kit lens, I would need a really high ISO setting and the
image would have been really noisy and bad.
Second reason for 50mm lenses is bokeh.
What is bokeh? As said, objects in background are blurry and the subject is sharp.
All the blurry objects like light sources etc. give a nice impression on the image.
The f-number gives us that because depth of field depends on that.
The smaller the number, the smaller the DOF.
Our subject is sharp as you can see and the background is blurry which lets you
focus on the subject. Kit lenses with aperture range f/3.5 to 5.6 don't have this effect.
This makes the 50mm f/1.8 ideal for portrait work.
Third reason for choosing prime lenses is that they are almos always sharper than kit lenses.
Sharpness
Prime lenses are always sharper than zoom lenses. It is so because their construction contains
less optical elements and there are less moving elements so focusing will always be sharper.
Thats why this 50mm prime lens is sharper than kit lenses.
If you look at the photos, you can see that images taken with this lens are very sharp.
Especially looking at fine details like hair, these are clear and sharp.
These were the three main reasons for selecting prime lenses.
Actually theres a fourth reason: 50mm lenses are one of the cheapest.
All camera brands have their own 50mm lenses. We have here Sony, Nikon, Canon and Pentax.
These are all available at Photopoint stores so you can go to check them out and buy.
