This is the National Weather Service in Elko with a web brief on a developing winter storm
that will impact Northern and Central Nevada on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Confidence
is increasing that most of central and eastern Nevada will experience accumulating snowfall,
with less expected in the north.
The Northern Hemisphere satellite image is shown here, taken this afternoon. The strong
low pressure system that we’ve been watching over the past three days is now located in
the Gulf of Alaska. This winter storm will likely affect Northern and Central Nevada
Tuesday and Wednesday with accumulating snowfall, especially for central and eastern Nevada.
Seen above is the forecast surface map for Tuesday evening, showing an area of surface
low pressure near southwestern Nevada with the possibility of heavy snow for portions
of central and eastern Nevada. Winter Storm Watches have been issued and
are shaded in blue on the map of Nevada. Roads highlighted in yellow will have the highest
risk of seeing significant snow and adverse travel conditions. These roads include U.S.
6, 50, 93, and parts of I-80. Numerous state routes through White Pine northeastern Nye,
Southern Lander/Eureka Counties will also be impacted. Winter Weather Advisories will
likely be needed for Humboldt, northwestern Nye, and the rest of Elko County.
This image shows the forecasted total snowfall amounts for Tuesday and Wednesday. The heaviest
snowfall is expected in central and eastern Nevada. Many area highways may experience
icy and snow covered roads, however parts of US Highway 50, 93, and 6 will experience
the greatest impacts due to heavier snow. Heavy snow is expected in central and eastern
Nevada, with 5-9 inches of snow in the valleys and 9-16 inches in the mountains. Locally
up to 2 feet of snow can be expected in the highest mountains, such as the Ruby, Diamond,
Snake, and Schell ranges. Northwest winds Tuesday night into Wednesday will create areas
of blowing and drifting snow. This in combination with heavy snow will create reduced visibilities
below one quarter mile at times. Roads will become snow covered and dangerous, especially
Tuesday night. In summary, a strong winter storm is expected
to affect much of central and eastern Nevada Tuesday and Wednesday. The potential exists
for moderate to heavy snow in portions of central and eastern Nevada. The corridor from
US Highway 50 , 93, and 6 will experience the greatest impacts due to heavier snow,
with icy and snow covered roads expeected. If traveling during the Tuesday and Wednesday
timeframe, please stay tuned to your favorite weather provider before heading out.
