Little by little they have been involved
It has been very hard
because always in our communities the role of women is still very marginal
its a role that if it is the party of the town you got to make the food
serve all, wash de dishes and everything
But you dont get to make decisions, you dont get a charge of representation
you dont get to be in assembly but you have to participate in the tekio
But you don't get to make Decisions.
Why and how to do a workshop on
women's rights
and gender violence
FREE WOMEN
Mixtec women live in a reality of discrimination and violence
by the simple fact of being women
Cactus proposed this workshop in the framework of the free women campaign
as a tool of reflexion and Diffusion about women´s rights and gender violence
We search proposals of changes emerged from below
We Invite to share our learning and rebuild our personal
social and community relationships
With equalty and Justice for all.
The human Rights are the results of struggles
These are achievements that men and Women have reached to protect themselves from the abuses.
What are the Rights?
human rights: right to life
Right to a roof
Right to health
Not just a doctor, but there has to be spaces where they can heal diseases.
Right to freedom of expression
Right to democracy
equality in law
right to decent work
Work without discrimination without abuse
right to choose partner in freedom
right to the difference
Right to education
They said its free, but you still have to pay for school supplies
The uniforms, you are always spending
right to self determination
rigth to autonomy
It isn't autonomous if it's not allowed for example to manage natural resources
or If they can not govern themselves
In this country, as in others, they deny the possibility that you are an indigenous people
Rigth to peace
Right to political participation
I can not participate
why?
becouse what you mentioned
if all these rights belong to everyone, why are we talking about the
women's human "rights?
We understand that besides the human rights,
its needed to be women's rights
We can say that those Rights are special
Because the women are living a different situation
for example when we talk about the human right of the health, we are talking in general
that we can solve our diseases, That we can solve if we had an accident.
When we talk about the Rights of womens health, we are talking about their reproductive rights.
The right to decent work
Here is no other job that we can do and earn a living
The education we receive from childhood is that men work and women take care of children
right to political participation
There have been women presidents?
-no
they have less political participation, in the towns.
When we are only women we make decisions among all
but when there is a man Or two Men, the things change and are not the same
because they say: "let me speak first then you talk"
Right to education
men often have more opportunities to study than women
and the women's parents dont allow them
they say that they must stay in their house or get married, but not study
The gender is something we can build. It is the role we have in society
What makes us different in nature to men and women is sex
It's asked to join in groups and write the typical characteristics of men and women. It is discussed differences between gender and sex
-How are the women? -submissive, patient...
-well behaved...
-gross, kind, responsible...
-good mothers, victims, envious...
about the Mens we wrote: drunk, womanizing...
male chauvinist, selfish, friendly, discriminatory, violent
Do you Believe that everything is like this, that we are like this by nature?
-Is the education that they give us
-We buy cars for the boys and dolls for the girls, no?
That you have to learn how to take care of your children
My children are all the same for me, but for the old folks who have lived In tepejillo
they have a different opinion about this things
For you is it true that men are considered male chauvinist or superior?
yes, because they think yhat they worth more than women
why do you think they believe that they are better than women?
because they are stronger than women
There are not strong or weak, we are all a little bit strong and a little bit weak
The world is arranged and constructed according to the sex of individuals
and this is given by a patriarchal system
where the masculine, which is attributed to men is over the feminine
and ensure the subordination of women.
But this could be changed
The Gender violence is something that we learn and we are able to unlearn it.
types of violence: The Violence against womens pervades every sector of society
Story or dramatization of such violence: It is divided into groups and each group will play count, describe, or represent a type of violence
type of violence: physical violence
This is the most obvious type of violence
includes any act of non-accidental causes or could cause damage in the woman's body
When parents beat their children, that can cause other violences such as physical And psychological
Psychological or emotional violence:
It is the most common one and is a antecedent of physical violence
Are all those attitudes or words that damage emotional stability and makes the person feel bad
Often the men to control women, they insult them using phrases that hurts and make them feel less
And also using chantage Threatening that they will do damage to what for them is important
*** violence: It refers to all those behaviors that damage another person's intimity
There are other examples that gave us ourpartners: Lift the skirt to a person or pants
kissing a person by force, hug a person to force
The Women between 15 and 44 years old are at greater risk of being ***
or poorly treated at home than to suffer cancer
Economic violence: It Consists of the punishment by controlling the money or materials
as money own properties or someone else properties
The father came home after cashing a check with money
Arriving his wife asks for money for household; expenses, rent, clothing, and food
But the husband responds with yelling, scolding, saying that if she wants money she has to go to work
Violence in armed conflict
Includes in the killing, *** slavery, forced pregnancy
The pressure of men through physical and psychological harm to the women from their families
As to be displaced from their original places
70% of casualties in recent conflicts have been non-combatants, mostly women and children
Bety struggled to pacify a group of people and look what happend to her
{How is the dynamic of violence?} {It is shown the cycle of violence} The Violence follows a cycle, a series of events that happens over and over again and keep increasing over the time
To understand this better we decided to divided it into four stages
First stage : the honeymoon, or also called the manipulation , where everything seems okay
the abuser shows a lot of love to his couple and childrens he tells her he loves her and that things are going to be better if she behaves well
This stage is closely linked with repentance
Second stage: There is a small succession of episodes between the couple
The anger becomes stronger each time, In order to prevent the overflowing situation she gradually accepts the abuses
Third stage: Violence; this is where there is a discharge of tension which can range from a push until ***, It is a short but very painful stage
the victim feels hopelessly and weak
Step Four: Repentance: The agresor asks forgiveness and promises it will not happen again The women believes him
if she had left him, he will do anything to be accepted by her again
4.¿What do we do?
{¿What can we do to commit against violence and in particular with the gender violence in the community?}
There was a situation of extreme violence in Chihuahua, and then activists, women activists started to come out
¿What is a activist woman ? is a woman that says enough of this!
We must begin to educate ourselves in a different way , educating ourselves knowing that women and men have the same rights
I think that if we know about this situation we have to spread the word with everybody and maybe we can change something
{Graphical presentation of the campaign} {Description} {¿If you would like to give a message to a woman, how would you give it?} See the different examples that could be given:
We did 4 posters that show this idea of free women and the posters have different phrases
Free Womens, Weavers of Hope, entitled without violence, owners of our body, protagonists of our lives
The action that you are doing by coming to the workshop it´s to break a scheme that is not common to break in the community, some women do not want to hear about this
The problem is that there are women who say that it's not right whats happening
But there still some others that defend this by saying that this happens becouse of the local customs; that i have to let someone hurt me, that i have to do this and that and i have to get married
And some women defend that you can not tell them to denounce, because there are women who argued; "that is like this way that they have to live" and that is not right
¿Why is it necessary to do workshops about women´s rights?
Is necessary because it is a way to build justice, we think we can not change the conditions of life, the state or governments
if we do not change from the everyday these conditions of injustice and oppressions that we generate
what we discussed in the workshop is that the sistem of patriarchy or male chauvinist
is like the capitalism where there are oppressors and oppressed, and it is a very difficult situation especially in the indigenous communities
Because there are strong cultural things like male chauvinist and violence to the women
Thanks to the Mixtec communities
It is the time of us the people
