Colon cancer under the age of 40 is not that common. If we see a patient who is in their
40s or under the age of 40 that sends off alarms and we really want to get a good family
history to see if there are risks in other family for the development of colon cancer.
There are some very interesting data from The Centers for Disease Control, The CDC,
and they have actually come up with some prediction models that help understand what the risks
are. If you are at the age of 30 then over the next 10 years your risk of colon cancer
is well less than 1%, it's 0.7%. So that just tells you how unusual or uncommon it is for
patients to develop colon cancer at the age of 40.
