Actually, I do have a particular reason whyÉ I think itÕsÉ I am very happy that you are
making this film for a lot of reasons. One, I think itÕs to meÉ itÕs wonderful to see
father and son working so hard to understand disability and to be able to convey it to
the public, and I commend you for what you are doing together and very proud to see that.
Another compelling reason I think for you to make this film is that people you are interviewing,
the people who have had a hand and shape being the history of the disability rights movement
and not only in this country but in the world, and thatÕs a very important endeavor that
I think the general public needs to know about, because it is an important social movement
that has had a dramatic impact on the world. And another reason that you should continue
to do this is because there areÉ exist a field called Disability Studies. When we first
started out, Disability Studies wasnÕt talked about. But now thereÕs a field in the University
level where people can study disability and I think the documentaries like this on and
historical facts that you are collecting, very important for us to capture and be able
to preserve and present to students who are coming along now, who werenÕt alive when
disability rights movement began, and who donÕt know what it is like to be discriminated
against, to be patronized, condescended and to be with rights they can take advantage
of, take for granted. Just donÕt believe that didnÕt exist for people with disabilities
when it all started. And now that people grow up and donÕt feel the same kind of communication,
I am not saying that itÕs gone but itÕs not as bad as it used to be. And I think we
need to preserve these stories for posterity to be able to hand them on, and I would like
to have access to this in my class. I teach in the field of Disability Studies, and I
would like my students to hear these stories of the people who came before, and who actually
created a disability rights movement in the world and changed peopleÕs lives. So I hope
you keep it up.
