Good afternoon. This is Patricia Atwell with the National Weather Service in Peachtree
City GA with a briefing on the expected weather conditions through the upcoming week.
After the heavy rains of the past week, minor river flooding will continue along the Ocmulgee
River as the flood wave works its way down to Hawkinsville and Abbeville by early next
week.
By Friday afternoon an upper level low over the Great Lakes area and will push a shortwave
across north GA. There is enough moisture available for sprinkles Friday morning to
become a rain/snow mix mainly across the higher elevations Friday evening into Saturday morning.
Temperatures on Saturday morning will drop into the mid to upper 20s across north Georgia
with lower to mid 30s expected from Atlanta to Athens and southward.
Snowfall accumulations will be light across much of North Georgia by Saturday morning,
with one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch expected mainly over the Northeast Georgia Mountains.
The greater amounts of one-quarter inch are expected in the higher elevations.
Saturday Afternoon Weather Pattern A second upper level shortwave will move across
the area Saturday afternoon and evening. Flurries will be possible by late Saturday Afternoon
in northwest GA and are expected to spread as far south as a Lagrange to Athens line
through the evening. Afternoon temperatures will only climb into the 40s Saturday and
quickly drop to below freezing over north GA by late afternoon with overnight lows in
the 20s expected for Sunday morning across the forecast area.
Snowfall accumulations will be confined to North Georgia, with one-tenth of an inch expected.
No accumulations are expected with the flurries in the Atlanta and Athens areas.
The next system will be on Tuesday when a cold front will move across the southeast.
This cold front will bring a chance of thunderstorms throughout the day, with showers tapering
off over east central Georgia by Wednesday morning. Severe Thunderstorms are not anticipated
at this time.
The seven day rainfall total through next Thursday morning is showing one-half to one
inch of rainfall across the area with the greatest totals -- near one inch -- over
the northeast Georgia mountains.
In summary...Sprinkles will change to a rain/snow mix Friday evening over north Georgia, with
less than one-quarter inch accumulations expected. Snow flurries will be possible Saturday evening
as far south as a LaGrange to Athens line, with a chance of snow across north Georgia.
Accumulations Saturday evening will be around one-tenth of an inch mainly across far north
Georgia. A cold front on Tuesday will bring a chance of thunderstorms throughout the day.
Rainfall totals over the next week are expected to be one-half to one inch with the highest
totals in the Northeast Georgia Mountains.
