GSK is one of the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies and considers innovation as key
to future leadership.
This is why they created a department called 'Center of Excellence'.
This group reached out to Siemens some time ago for a new project called 'Continuous Manufacturing.'
The drivers for this project were the big benefits GSK saw.
They saw scale-down on the footprint, granulating on a gram scale rather than a kilo scale
and drying and blending on a kilo scale rather than a silo scale.
They also envisioned simplification of the process making it easy to control stop and
start and understand.
But this project was not only about creating a new and innovative technology.
It was also about a new way of working together.
GSK created a coalition with GEA and Siemens.
GSK brought experience on pharmaceutical manufacturing.
GEA provided their process knowledge
and Siemens brought industry knowledge and massive experiences in process automation,
PAT and MES.
This, combined with its supplier status of trusted adviser
and its a good relationship with GSK,
convinced GSK to work with Siemens on this very challenging project.
The cooperation in this project went so much beyond the usual.
It allowed the three parties to solve issues rapidly and work together well.
The result was extremely impressive.
One of the targets from the Center of Excellence innovation was to prove that they can walk
the talk and they did.
The result is that now more than ever Siemens is seen as the strategic supplier for GSK.
Today, GSK knows the value Siemens can bring to its business by helping GSK invest in new
technologies and participate in innovative projects.
