Hi, this is Liz with ESL Calgary Online.
Welcome to today’s lesson on daily life in Calgary.
Our video today is about the municipal census.
The census is happening during the month of April 2012 in Calgary.
Let’s start out by visiting the City of Calgary’s website.
It has a useful search tool on its home page.
We’ll enter “census 2012”
and open
the first link.
This page gives you the basics.
The civic census happens each year, and as I mentioned earlier
it started on April 1 of this year.
The purpose of the census is to get an official count
of the population and dwelling units. In other words,
how many people live in Calgary and how many residences there are.
The information is used for
provincial grants, for city planning and
for predicting future school enrolments.
All information that is collected is protected by the
Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
The census questions are about basic household information.
How many people live here? Do you own or rent?
Which school system do you support: public, separate,
both, neither, or unknown?
How many pre-school aged children live here? In other words,
children born in 2006 or later.
Census takers are also called enumerators.
All census takers must wear their official
identification badge. This badge contains a photo,
their first name, and an identification number.
If you are not home when the census taker comes,
you will probably receive a note like this. You can call back
and do the interview over the phone if you like. If not,
the census taker will stop by another time.
This notice will contain
the enumerator’s, or census taker’s, name,
phone number, and best time to call back.
Hello. Hi there, how are you today? I’m well, how are you? Good thanks.
Uh, I am doing the 2012 civic census for the City of Calgary.
Would you have a couple of minutes to answer a few questions? Absolutely. Great thanks.
Okay, so the first question is about how many residents live in the house.
We have three. Okay. Great, thank you.
The next question is about ownership. Do you own or rent? We own the house.
Great. The next question is about school codes.
So, would you support a public school system, separate school system,
other or both? Um, we support
the public. Okay, thank you. And the last question is about the number of
children in the household who are pre-school.
Are there any pre-school children in the household right now? No, none. Great.
Thank you very much. Have a great day. Thanks very much. Bye bye.
So, let’s recap. The census is done every year
to find out how many people live in Calgary, for planning, grants and services.
The information you provide is confidential.
It takes a couple of minutes to complete.
You can find out more information by going to the City of Calgary’s website.
or by calling 3-1-1.
