Once upon a time, the money in the bag, the watch and chain on the waistcoat,
The tobacco case in the pocket, belts and mirrors for ladies were all silver
those were the days...
This is the 'Cevahir Bedesten', the nucleus of the Grand Bazaar.
The first Bazaar built by Mehmed, the Conquerer, long before the rest.
Also known as the Inner Bazaar or the Old Bazaar.
Its area of only an acre is covered by as many as 15 domes.
It has been said that once,
only the finest of all jewels, fabrics
and weapons were sold here.
Jewellers, especially, were the heart and sould of the Covered Bazaar.
On festive days while Istanbul donned her decorations,
the prettiest and the richest ornaments were prepared by the Bazaar shopkeepers,
and the best displays were put on by the Jewellers in the Bazaar.
The Streets of Bedesten glittered with thousands of multicoloured jewels...
