Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen.
My name is Daniel Perell and I'm a representative at the Baha'i International Community.
I thank you so much for
bearing the rain and coming over to our event called "Doctrine of Recovery,
Portraits of an ever-advancing civilization."
Steven Gonzalez
is a colleague of ours and he's going to introduce the project and
thoughts behind it.
He's a professor at the Pheonix School of Law and he's been a delegate
of the Baha'i International Community for a few years here.
So it's a pleasure to have him
and I'll just turn the floor over. Steven.
Thank you, Daniel and welcome everybody.
Welcome. This is our launching, really, of the Baha'i International
Community's photo
compilation essay
and I should mention that the event is obviously being videotaped.
This photographic essay is a product of the labor of many people
but in particular the work of a wonderful photographer named
Nancy Wong from Minneapolis Minnesota
and we really would like to thank her for her contribution
to this project. She's not here today she had to go back to Minnesota.
Thanks also to the people who
gave of their time and gave her permission to photograph them
and to be interviewed. We really appreciate their time. Although the
people you can see from the photographs here
to my right
hail from all over the world -
Bangladesh, Canada, Cambodia, Dominica,
Kenya, Mexico, Norway,
Peru, Taiwan and US Hawaii --
in some ways, they give voice to the indigenous peoples
attending the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues this week
from all the different indigenous lands.
When we talked about putting together this project,
the idea was simply to offer a platform, an opportunity, for
indigenous voices to express themselves
and to share
a little bit of where they came from.
We actually asked
three questions
of them -- and the questions are on the tables you can see them for
yourself.
And
the it you'll see from the videotape that we're going to show you
how they responded to the various questions. And I would again thank
you all for being here and the without waiting any longer why don't we go
ahead
and view the project.
