Hi my name is Stephen Williams, I am a member of the United
Kingdom Parliament. Back in 2005 when I was first elected I
was the only openly gay Liberal Democrat MP.
I am please to say in the new parliament there are more than
twenty Members of Parliament who are openly gay, from right
across the political spectrum and I’m sure we can work together
in order to make a difference for LGBT people up and down
the country. Since I’ve been an MP I’ve campaigned on the
issue of homophobic bullying. One of the reasons why I’ve
done that is because when I was in school myself, I was as
victim of homophobic bullying, I was too afraid to admit I was
gay at the time. I want to make sure that every child or young
person who thinks or knows that they are gay has no reason to
be afraid of the issue when they're in school today. The new
coalition government has got good policies in place across a
whole range of LGBT issues, but in particular it is determined
to tackle homophobic bullying in schools. So I’m confident, that
from now, it gets better today and we can make it happen.
