Like many veterans who've recently returned from Iraq or Afghanistan, Anthony Fabiano
is looking for a job.
As Marine Corps officer, he managed supply chains in Asia and the Middle East.
He's been out of the Corps since September, and despite an MBA and 22 years of military
service he's struggling in the civilian job market.
"I've applied to probably over 400 jobs. Out of that 400 jobs, I got three calls."
"It's frustrating."
But Wells Fargo is working to make things easier for people like Anthony - both by recruiting
veterans and advocating for them in the community.
"Wells Fargo is in a great position to help the veteran...from recruiting great talent
to supporting key foundations...to interacting with government at the highest levels to ensure
that Wells Fargo's voice is heard and the veteran voice is also heard...And finally,
helping...those veteran entrepreneurs, build and start the next great business."
We're sponsoring job fairs like this one where representatives from several lines of business
are on hand to meet vets in person and talk with them face to face about their careers.
"We are trying to translate those skills and trying to identify what maybe the artillery
officer or the military policeman or the logistician might be able to add to Wells Fargo."
Alice Barron worked in food service in the Marine Corps. Now she's interested in the
mortgage business.
"In the military, you know, you're guaranteed a job, you're guaranteed a regular paycheck...but
once you come out into the real world...there's no guarantees. There's no guarantees that
the company will still be open and there's no guarantee that there will be a paycheck
next week."
"Veterans are a very attractive candidate pool for Wells Fargo because they're already
bringing the leadership skills that they learned in the military...with the attention to detail,
the structure, the chain of command, a sense of urgency. They're bringing these to the
table. All we have to do as Wells Fargo employees is teach them a product and really create
that open environment for them once they're in house."
Another plus is our Military Veterans Team Member Network, which is active all over the
company.
"We have a lot of resident expertise dealing with home issues, job issues, benefit issues...connections
in the community and... we can leverage those to help the veteran."
Help we're committed to for the long haul. "They're going to be coming home for the next
three years. And this is not a project that's resolved quickly or easily. And it's going
to take a concerted effort at all levels of Wells Fargo...to make this work. It's the
right thing to do."
