>> RTI, a Response to Intervention, is a process
that provides instructional strategies
to all students based on their needs.
It's really important because historically we had operated
under a wait to fail model in which students really did have
to exhibit failure to be able
to get some specialized intervention.
With this process, teams screen students to identify those
who may be at risk and then begin
to create specialized interventions
that can help those students be successful.
SLPs are really important to this process
because certainly literacy and much of what goes
on in schools is founded in communication.
So SLPs bring their expertise, their knowledge
and their experience in the area of communication to the team
so that they can help teams
to understand how communication supports all of their activities
and what strategies would be best at addressing students
with those communication weaknesses.
They're certainly great at collaborating with teams
and working with students.
