Hello and welcome to Truthloader Science in 90 seconds. The video might be 480p but the
knowledge is full HD. And first up, show Skylon the money. Reaction Engines Limited have been
given 60 million in funding by the British Government to help build a complete working
version of their revolutionary sabre engine. The unique half jet, half rocket cools air
by thousands of degrees in a 100th of a second allowing it to be burned with hydrogen. What
that means is that when the engine is fitted to a Skylon plane it will be able to take
off from a runway, fly straight into space, land and take off again in the fraction of
the time and cost of a rocket launch.
Next up and check this out. Students at the university of Eindhoven in the Netherlands
say they've created the world's first solar paneled large family car. Solar team Eindhoven
say that the vehicle which feeds solar energy to batteries and motors as it goes is the
first truly social application of the technology and the team hope to be able to reproduce
it for roughly the same price as an existing family saloon. And the good news, even in
coldier, cloudier climes it collects twice as much power as it needs so you can plug
it back into the grid and get some cashback.
And finally, scientists in the US have come a step closer to curing diseases caused by
extra chromosomes, such as Down Syndrome. Scientists at the University of Massachusetts
Medical School managed to switch off the extra chromosome, a duplicate of number 21 in our
23 pairs in cells in a lab. They say a cure for the condition is decades away if it's
even possible but the research is a huge leap forward.
That's it from us today as always we've done longer videos on these stories, we actually
spoke to the Skylon people earlier in the year so click the links to see more.
