Hey man, how did you get that powerful looking physique?
Just doing simple compound exercises.
Like what?
Heavy deadlifts, squats, and bench press-- with some accessory stuff thrown in there
like dips, pull-ups, and Romanian deadlifts.
So you do the deadlifts heavy or light?
Absolutely. Deadlifts are prime in the 6 or less rep range with a heavy load.
I'm not sure I can lift very heavy, I feel like my knees and back cannot take it.
That is a common concern by novice lifters. What you need to do is learn proper form and
technique, because when you near your maximum, your weak links will break down quickly causing
you to injure yourself.
Okay.
You have to train your body to do the movement and then train to lift heavy. People generally
just want to hop in there and start lifting heavy stuff without understanding what they
are doing.
So what should I shoot for?
It is not uncommon for guys to be deadlifting over four hundred pounds for at least one
rep. A simple 5x5 approach would probably be best for you for awhile. Just start with
the bar and add five pounds every week.
How long should I do it?
Do it as long as you can, until you just cannot seem to make any progress. Eventually you
can get away with deadlifting less and less because the loads will be so high your body
won't need the frequency as much.
I hear horror stories about deadlifting heavy, should I fear anything?
As long as you lift with good technique and learn the lift correctly, not really. If you
stay in it long enough, eventually something will happen... but lets face it, cross a street
enough you'll eventually get hit by a car.
I see...
Just start off slow and stay in control of what you are doing. The body is highly adaptable.
There is nothing abnormal or dangerous about picking something off the ground and putting
it back down... and that is exactly what the deadlift is.
