Hi. My name is Erika Schmelzer Webb, and I teach English at East Jessamine High School
in Nicholasville, Kentucky. And I want to talk about two teachers who have greatly inspired
me in my life. The first is my high school Latin teacher at Madison Central High School
in Richmond, Kentucky, Estelle Bayer. And the second is my colleague, Joey Mau, who
teaches English with me at East Jessamine. Both of these teachers embody what I think
is some of the most amazing work that a teacher can do which is to create a really intellectually
rigorous environment and yet a place that also kids want to achieve. You know, it's
hard but you want to do it because the teacher shows you so much love and so much compassion
and believes that you can do it. And Mrs. Bayer did that for us as Latin students. We
loved it, you know, because Mrs. Bayer thought that we could and we wanted to prove it to
her that her hope and belief in us was warranted. And my colleague, Joey, does the same for
the students at our school. And he also believes the best of his fellow colleagues. And so
we want to live up his expectations and prove that he's not wrong. Thanks.
