Mike Henricksen: Hi. This is Mike Henricksen on the O'Reilly Velocity 2011 Conference.
I'm here with Rick Rivera from Google Inc.
Rick, is this your first Velocity and if it is, what do you think of it?
Rick Rivera: This is my first Velocity.
So far, it's a great conference.
Met a lot of very, very cool people.
And yeah, I'm having a good time.
Mike Henricksen: Also, there's kind of a theme running through this conference
about web ops and dev ops.
Two kind of different audiences coming together,
kind of taking down the barrier between 'em,
working together a little bit more.
Are you seeing that same sort of thing in your hiring or with people at Google?
The people have two distinct teams or are they more blended and hybrid?
Rick Rivera: So I support a group called Google.com Engineering,
internally referred to as Site Reliability Engineers and they,
that role very much bridges the gap
between software development and systems engineering.
So definitely finding that hiring technical generalists into roles
like site reliability engineering is really, really helping us out at Google.
It's a good role.
Mike Henricksen: So I also hear that Google is hiring.
You have a special hiring booth over here.
Rick Rivera: Right.
Mike Henricksen: Where you're looking for people to join Google.
So are you hiring rock stars?
Are you hiring everyone in the ecosystem?
Or what are you specifically looking for?
Rick Rivera: Of course we're looking for rock stars.
Just people that are very passionate about technology.
So it's been great just networking with all different kinds of people
but you know Google looks for very, very good engineers, so for sure.
Mike Henricksen: So are you looking for any specific talent
or are they going to be dev ops or web ops people
or just across the spectrum?
Rick Rivera: So it's pretty much across the spectrum.
So service side developers, front end.
Like I was just mentioning the technical generalists.
So it's so, all of engineering is looking to grow right now at Google.
Mike Henricksen: Any specific things that people should contact you
or contact someone to put their name in the hat or--
Rick Rivera: Sure.
We're very, we always follow up on our jobs page
so that is always up to date
and has all of the latest positions available for every Google location.
So just check out the jobs page and apply
and someone will get back to you very soon.
Mike Henricksen: Okay.
So what are you thinking about 2012 and Velocity?
Are you guys gonna be here
and is the world gonna be changed by then or are you still evolving?
Rick Rivera: Still evolving.
Still growing and definitely we'll be at Velocity 2012.
Mike Henricksen: So we'll see you here next year?
Rick Rivera: For sure.
Mike Henricksen: All right.
Rick, thank you very much.
I really enjoyed it.
