I honestly can't remember a time in my life where I didn't want to be a doctor.
I wanted to care for people. I wanted to know that what I'm doing
can really be transformative for someone. So, I'm Doctor Amanda Williams Calhoun
and I'm a physician in the Permanente Medical Group.
There's lots of data in the literature about the benefits of early prenatal care and
actually preconception, and Kaiser Permanente really is the nation's leader in preconception.
By having our integrated system, our medical records where we can see
what meds people are on, track their weight, see how their periods are and so forth,
we have the capacity to have them go into their pregnancy much healthier.
We actually are looking at exercise as a vital sign now,
as a key determinant of patients' well being. Fortunately, we're also big believers in
today's work today and get the patient what they need on the spot instead of
sending them off to one place or the other. I email my patients over
our secure messaging system all the time and my patients so prefer it.
We also have telephone appointments, so when it comes to an abnormal lab,
an ultrasound that needs follow up - and it actually allows us to take
just as good care of the patient but still respecting their time
and their need to do other things in their lives.
And it really allows me to take better care of the patient.
