My name is Chris Reddington, I'm from Norwich, I'm 20 years old and I'm currently a student.
The reason I think buses are important is because for visually impaired and for blind
people they allow us to get around without the hassle of crossing big roads, without
the stress that comes with having to get someone to drive you around and the cost as well.
Buses are an easy way to get from A to B. They're inexpensive and free because of the
National Bus Pass whereas trains aren't and trains can be sparse in rural areas, especially
places like Norwich. So they are vital to any visually impaired or blind person's independence
really.
I think that it's vital that we have driver training on buses because it will allow people
like me to be firstly independent,
It would allow us to interact with the bus driver in a way that is efficient but also
helpful to us as visually impaired and blind people.
It will avoid accidents like the one I had by far because the driver will be aware that
I can't see him pulling away.
It will also be important because we as members of the public will be able to understand bus
drivers' point of view and we as members of the general public will be able to understand
when bus drivers make mistakes due to them not hearing and things.
So there is a two way system and it really can be improved because by giving drivers
training they can improve, they can speak up because they will realise we can't hear
them and that's important because we can't see their facial expressions.
It will also mean that we no longer have to rely on other passengers on the bus and it
will also speed up the process of getting on the bus which will make the bus on time
more often and will improve everyone's journey really.
