[A stunning new estimate from the CDC that diabetes and pre-diabetes
now affects almost 105 million Americans
In addition to the health issues
there are concerns about the costs to health care as well. Dr. David Samadi is a member
of our Fox News Medical "A-Team" and he joins us right now. Doctor why is diabetes overwhelming
so many people in this country right now?] It's a serious health hazard Kelly and it's
the seventh
leading cause of death in this country and it is a very serious topic today. You talk
about the health care reform and the impact of this disease on the financial side of it.
Over $174 billion goes into treatment and the diagnosis of diabetes.
You add the pre-diabetic patients to this and now you're talking about
$218 billion. It has a huge impact
Now where does this cost come from? You mentioned that 105 million
Americans are being affected; over a third of the country.
Just last year alone we had 1.9 million new cases of diabetes in this country.
This is a serious health hazard and the biggest problem of this is the fact
that it affects all the systems. From the eye you can get blurred vision and blindness.
It can affect the kidneys,
you can get neuropathy. One of the things that I see in my practice when I have a young
40 year old man or 50 year old, when they have *** dysfunction that's one of
the early signs of diabetes and heart disease.
So, it's a systemic disease.
If you're over 45 and you're obese and you have family history of diabetes now you need
to really pay attention here. In the past Kelly we've talked a lot about
going back to the gym to start exercising, eating a healthy diet, [We just talked about it last week]
I know we've been talking about it over and over again but this is an absolutely serious
conversation and I want America to
listen to this and pay attention. No one is going to help us unless we do something
about this ourselves. It's the best gift you can give yourself, it's called the gift of
life. You need to incorporate exercise, cut down on the calories, cut down on the high fat diet.
Eat vegetables and fruits and take this as serious as possible. Diabetes affects your
heart, it causes stroke, it causes systemic disease, and I hope we can get the message out.
Everyone who cares I want you to do well and I hope it makes a huge difference. [Well that
right there is great advice and a great recommendation for how to deal with diabetes
and even pre-diabetes] A hundred percent. My biggest concerns
are the people out there that are on the pipeline on getting diabetes. We can beat this disease,
it can became defeated.
I want you to really just get out of that couch, go out there
and start doing something about it. We have to do something about this and that's how
the health care reform is going to be fixed. No one else is going to do it for us and I
hope this was helpful. [I love your passion about that Dr. David Samadi] Thank you
so much for having me. [Alright, thank you.]
